Last-mile delivery is the most expensive and most polluting leg of the supply chain, and inefficient routing makes both problems worse. Every wasted mile means more fuel burned and more carbon emitted, and every late delivery gets passed on to small retailers and everyday customers as higher fees and unreliable service. In dense urban areas, poorly routed delivery fleets also add directly to traffic congestion and local air pollution that residents breathe every day. Smarter routing is a small software change with an outsized environmental and community footprint.
MetroFleet's dispatchers were planning routes manually each morning based on static assumptions about traffic, which fell apart the moment a road closed or a delivery window changed. There was no way to re-route a driver mid-day without a phone call, and no reliable way to give customers an honest ETA.
